One Family Health ModelA unique public-private partnership with Rwanda's Ministry of Health

About Us

Mission statement - OFH's mission is to improve access to quality essential medicines and basic healthcare services in isolated communities, using a sustainable business model to help underserved communities build health as an asset.

What We DoWe focus in three areas

Healthcare Access

Healthcare Access

In Rwanda, known as the land of a thousand hills, the majority of the population lives in rural areas and lack of transportation significantly impedes access to basic healthcare.

In mountainous Rwanda, the average family walks two hours or more to reach the nearest health facility. Evidence shows that, when forced to walk long distances, people seek healthcare later and less often. The result is that preventable diseases occur and treatable illnesses become life-threatening. One Family Health is working to eliminate this access barrier. By opening primary health clinics in rural communities, we bring essential medicines and healthcare services to the most vulnerable and underprivileged populations. By increasing access to basic medical intervention, our clinics play a crucial, often lifesaving role in the communities we serve.

Entrepreneurship

Image

One Family Health combines micro-enterprise and franchise business principles to support qualified nurses to become business-owners.

One Family Health recruits, trains, and supports qualified nurses to become business owners. We provide nurse-franchisees with access to start-up financing, training on clinical and management skills, and provide ongoing monitoring and support to ensure adherence to high-quality standards. One critical tool One Family Health provides is access and training on the use of an electronic health record system, that facilitates record keeping and clinic management. Supporting nurses to own and operate primary healthcare clinics enables them to improve their economic status and access to other opportunities. We support Franchisees by enhancing their business acumen and furthering their capacity to organize and manage their business. Franchisees are trained to manage their clinic finances and personnel, medicine stocks, patient health records, and interactions with health authorities.

Education

Image

One Family Health’s nurses focus on health promotion and disease prevention, reducing illness, mortality rates and rising health care costs.

Our nurses use patient consultations as an opportunity to improve patients’ health knowledge and literacy by helping them to better understand their conditions, root causes and what preventative steps can be taken in the future. This education positively impacts both the individual patient’s health and the entire community as hygiene and disease prevention habits improve over time. We also provide this education proactively to the local communities we serve. When there are recurrent illnesses within the wider community, OFH nurses coordinate with local authorities to organize health workshops aimed at prevention and containment.

How we do itFranchise model & partnership

Franchise model

Through an innovative franchise business model, One Family Health improves access to primary healthcare for rural populations. We recruit qualified nurses and empower them to own and operate independent health posts. As franchisor, we provide nurses with access to financing at preferable terms, training in clinical and management skills, ongoing support, and monitoring to ensure adherence to our high quality standards. In turn, nurses provide education, preventive care, and treatment to men, women and children in their communities.

Public-private partnership approach
What truly differentiates our model from other private clinic chains is our unique public-private partnership with Rwanda’s Ministry of Health. Through this partnership, our network is fully integrated into the government’s national plan to expand access to healthcare. Our Health Posts are co-branded with the Ministry of Health and the physical clinic space is provided by local government. This partnership also enables our nurses to claim reimbursement from the National Health Insurance, enabling us to keep services affordable for the most vulnerable, while providing a revenue stream that enables nurses to run viable businesses.

ImpactAccess, health, and empowerment

Increased Access

Our model brings services directly to communities. Growth has reduced common barriers to care such as lengthy and costly commutes, improving overall community health seeking behavior.

Improved Health

Our health clinics prevent and treat the major causes of community illnesses, ensuring quality of service through ease of diagnosis and use of protocols.

Economic Impact

Our network creates new jobs in rural areas, increasing economic empowerment especially for women, and also reduces the cost to government to deliver primary care.
